CHAPTER

SIXTEEN

Day 2: Second shift.

The next Uber driver arrives and parks on the same side of the street as Piper's house. A few car lengths away from her front door.

I throw up my hand to signal him that I want him to park where I'm standing across the street.

When he sees me, he hits the headlights twice, then looks at his phone and lifts it to his ear. Then, he starts to talk into it and doesn't move.

I sigh, deciding to risk the short-term exposure of crossing the street over the long-term exposure of standing on the sidewalk waiting for his conversation to end.

As soon as I step onto the pavement, the front door opens, and there stands my girl.

I stop in the middle of the street to watch her as she steps outside.

When she pauses to look around, my heart stops beating. She looks exactly the same.

Beautiful.

As soon as she spots me, there is a moment of ignorance. I'm just a stranger in the street. But then her eyes flare big as saucers when she recognizes me —her body tenses, stunned by my presence.

I knew she would know me. I knew time would not erase what we had. What we felt. What we share.

Love is eternal like that.

My heart starts to race as the passion for her hits it hard. If there was any doubt before that she is my one and that we belong together, it vanishes. I know exactly what I'm doing!

I stare at her, mesmerized. Her auburn hair is longer now and thicker. It covers her shoulders like a blanket.

Her body is toned like a runner, and based on what she's wearing, sweats and Converse trainers, I realize she's heading out for a run.

I smile, remembering how hard we laughed over all the different terminology between British and American English.

Our eyes connect, and I reach my hand out as I start walking toward her, hoping she will come to me willingly, understanding that I've returned as promised.

If she does, my plan is to snatch and grab her. I will snatch her into my arms, grab hold of her heart, and never let her go again. Then, we will make our escape in the Uber car waiting. The words we need to say will be said later away from him.

As I move toward her, she looks back at the door, but she stands frozen to the spot. I can feel her conflict, but my hope soars higher and higher the closer I get to her.

She's not fleeing.

She hasn't rejected me.

There's a chance.

If I can just touch her...

When I step up on the sidewalk at the bottom of the stoop, the prick appears in the doorway and shouts at her, "PIPER!"

She flinches.

But before she turns to face him, she looks me directly in the eye.

What the fuck?

Rage surges through my body. She has a black eye! Goddamn him!

My plan to snatch and grab her out from under his nose is instantly replaced with a plan to crush my fist in his face and then run off with her whether or not she is willing.
